Unzip Google Takeout automatically on Windows
A ZipFlip guide · October 2026
Google Takeout exports your Google Photos, Drive, Gmail and more as ZIP files. A big export arrives as many parts, like takeout-20261029T101500Z-001.zip, -002.zip, -003.zip and so on. Each one has to be unzipped before you can use your files.
The short answer
Each Takeout part is a complete ZIP on its own. You don't need to join them first: unzip every part, and together they hold your whole export. You can do that by hand in Windows, or let ZipFlip unzip each part the moment its download finishes.
By hand, with Windows
- Open your Downloads folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click the first Takeout ZIP and choose Extract All…, then Extract.
- Repeat for every part. With 20 parts, that's 20 rounds of clicking and waiting.
Automatically, with ZipFlip
- Install ZipFlip and sign in with Google. It starts watching your Downloads folder.
- Download your Takeout parts from Google as usual. Start them all at once if you like.
- As each part finishes downloading, ZipFlip unzips it into your Destination folder. Parts that are still downloading are left alone until they're complete.
Your original ZIPs stay in Downloads, so you can delete them once you've checked your files. Nothing is ever overwritten: if a folder with the same name already exists, the new one is numbered.
Tips for a smoother export
- Choose .zip, not .tgz. On Takeout's last step, keep the file type set to .zip. ZipFlip unzips ZIP files only.
- Pick a part size. Takeout offers 1 GB up to 50 GB per part. Bigger parts mean fewer files, but a failed download costs more to redo. 2 GB or 4 GB is a good balance.
- Check your disk space. You need room for the ZIPs and the unzipped files, so roughly twice the size of your export.
- Photos come with .json files. Google Photos exports include a small
.jsonfile next to many photos, holding details like the date taken. That's normal; keep them if you plan to import your photos elsewhere.
How many parts can ZipFlip Free handle?
ZipFlip Free unzips up to 10 ZIPs in any 7 days on each computer. Parts over the limit wait in ZipFlip and unzip by themselves as soon as there's room. For a large export, ZipFlip Unlimited removes the limit with a one-time purchase, with no subscription.
Downloads that unzip themselves. ZipFlip for Windows, free to try.
Common questions
Do I need to download all the parts before unzipping?
No. Each part unzips on its own, in any order.
One part says "Needs attention" in ZipFlip.
Usually the download didn't finish or was cut off. Download that part again from Takeout, then click Retry failed. Your other parts aren't affected.
Does ZipFlip upload my Takeout files anywhere?
No. Unzipping happens on your PC, and your files stay there. See our privacy policy.
